How We Work

Legislative Action

Massachusetts has a two year session, which starts in January of the “odd” numbered, and ends December of the “even” numbered year. Most legislative activity, however, for bills of any substantive matter takes place after a Committee Hearing usual sometime in late Summer or Fall of year one, with legislative action taking place in year two.

Most legislation with any significant impact on the MA General Laws or statutory changes impacting the Code of MA Regulations can only be acted on during what’s called a “Formal Session.”

Formal Sessions run weekly in the House & Senate from January of Year One through the third Tuesday in November, and from January of Year Two through July 31st.
